4.2 GFWC Centennial Year Of ObsWHEREAS The General Federation of Women's Clubs was organized on April 24, 1890 and duly chartered by President William McKinley and the United States Congress on March 3, 1901; and WHEREAS The General Federation of Women's Clubs is the largest and oldest non-denominational, international service organization of volunteer women in the world with 10 million members in all fifty states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and forty-six countries world wide; and WHEREAS For 100 years, the activities of the clubs affiliated with the General Federation of Woman's Clubs have made positive and practical contributions through their many volunteer efforts. And, the members of both Twentieth Century City Federation of Salina, Kansas and its parent organization, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, have contributed significantly to the civic, cultural, educational, and social betterment of our citizens; and WHEREAS The women who have served this organization have exemplified the highest standards of citizenship, concern for humankind, and spirit of renewal that has continued to build upon our nation's proud heritage and cultural legacy; and WHEREAS The GFWC of Kansas Federations of Women's Clubs, having 4,479 members in 251 clubs became affiliated with the parent organization, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, by having Kansas members present at the chartering service in 1890; and WHEREAS The clubs of the Twentieth Century City Federation of Salina, Kansas have existed for more than ninety years WHEREAS The General Federation of Women's Clubs will celebrate April 24, 1990 to April 24, 1991 as GFWC Centennial Year of Observance; SO NOW, THEREFORE I, Robert E. Frank, Mayor of the City of Salina, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the Year of April 24, 1990 to April 24, 1991 as GFWC CENTENNIAL YEAR OF OBSERVANCE and commend this observance to our citizens.
