Award contract for Underground Irrigation System - East Crawford Recreation Area, Project No. #08-2685.
BACKGROUND:
Due to the construction of new tennis courts at Central High School, the practice baseball field at Central High
School is being displaced. School district officials and city staff have discussed construction of a full size
baseball field which would serve both the school's needs during the spring season and the community's needs
during both the spring and summer. Currently, the city has three full sized baseball fields located at ECRA to
serve high schools, colleges, Parks and Recreation, American Legion, Babe Ruth, and semi pro programs.
Staff feels an additional practice field for this age group of participants is warranted. USD 305 and the city
would share in the total cost of the project, estimated to be $60,000. The field will be similar to Wilbur Field at
ECRA with irrigated outfield, enclosed chain link fencing, but no lights. Turf will be warm season grass to help
reduce water use. An agreement will allow priority use for Central High School after school during the high
school baseball season and the city will have scheduling responsibility during other times of the year.
Four bids were received on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 as follows:

FISCAL NOTE:
The City Commission approved $30,000 as part of the 2008 Special Parks Fund for construction of a baseball
field at the East Crawford Recreation Area. The project will be in partnership with USD 305, with each entity
funding $30,000 towards construction of the field.
CONFORMANCE WITH THE STRATEGIC PLAN:
Goal #3 The City will provide the highest quality of services, consistent with governing body direction,
available resources and staff commitment to quality.
COMMISSION ACTION:
It is recommended the City Commission award a contract for Underground Irrigation System-East Crawford
Recreation Area, Project #08-2685, to Professional Sprinkler Installation, Salina in the amount of $14,757.60.
