The Schilling Road bridge over Dry Creek Channel, located west of 1-135, is scheduled to
be closed for construction from June 5, 2000 to October 31, 2000. This five-month project is
a joint venture between the City of Salina and the Kansas Department of Transportation. The
contractor for the project is Dondlinger and Sons of Wichita, Kansas. Following are some
frequently asked questions about the project:
o*.o }Yhat improvements will the project provide?
The existing concrete span. bridge will be totally replaced with a box culvert bridge,
.. similar to the recent project on West Cloud Street. The new pavement for Schilling Road
will be four lanes wide and constructed of 8"concrete material. There will also be a filth,
let~ mm lane constructed on the west leg of the Virginia/Mar~lla intersection. In
addition, there will be a new concrete sidewalk along the north side of Schilling Road at
the new bridge.
°7° I~hat is the detour route for Schilling Road?
The recommended detour route is to travel east/west on Magnolia Road to the north or
Waterwell Road to the south. Each of those roads connects with Centennial Road which
in turn leads back to the Schilling Road area. Please see the map on the reverse side of
this page.
o~o ~ does the bridge need to be replaced?
Every bridge in Salina is thoroughly inspected on two-year cycles to determine the
condition and safety rating according to federal standards. The current Schilling Road
bridge almost 50 years old and considered "functionally obsolete". In fact, there has
been a reduced load rating on this bridge for years due to its condition. It is also more
cost-effective to replace this bridge than to repair it.
olo How will I get my children to Schilling School in the Fall, 2000?
City staffhas begun to have discussions with USD305 regarding this matter. One idea
has been to set up a "drop off, pick up" location on Marcella Drive where there is a
pedestrian bridge over Dry Creek Channel directly adjacent to the school Other ideas
are welcome. Arrangements will'be made prior to the beginning of the next school year.
· ~o What ifI need an ambulance, fire or police services?
The City Police and Fire Departments are making the necessary adjustments to account
for the project. The response time for any emergency service will be affected very
minimally. ~
