Ordinance No. 91-9451 Regarding Taxicab Fares.
Background
The Salina Code currently requires that the fare for the licensed taxicabs be kept on
file with the City Clerk and conspicuously posted in the cab. Section 40-59 of the
current Code also provides that: "Any charge made to a passenger at a rate other
than that fixed in this article shall be deemed a separate violation."
Various local cab companies either have or wish to offer senior citizen discounts.
Others have also suggested the possibility of charging a flat fee to drive persons
home from taverns or drinking establishments. Taken literally, Section 40-59
prohibits any deviation from the posted rates, whether more or less.
The propos'ed ordinance prohibits only a higher fare, thus allowing the special fares
while maintaining the consumer protection component of the ordinance.
Recommendation
Staff recommends adoption of the proposed ordinance.
