83-3675 Deregulation of Air Transportation1 u WHEREAS, deregulation of the air transportation industry has resulted in a decline in available interconnected services for long distance travelers throughout Kansas; and WHEREAS, there is a growing population of students, military personnel and older citizens as well as the general traveling public in Kansas requiring reliable and affordable surface mass transportation to major population centers such as St. Louis, Kansas City and Denver; and WHEREAS, Amtrak is fulfilling this need in many of the areas of the United States, but presently to a very limited extent in Kansas; and WHEREAS, Amtrak could feasibly expand its area of operation logically by utilizing existing Union Pacific rail facilities in Kansas; and WHEREAS, a vast majority of the people of Kansas live within an hour's drive of the Union Pacific Railroad mainline; SO NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Governing Body of the City of Salina, Kansas: Section 1. That it join with the many other cities, organizations and individuals interested in solving this problem by taking the following actions: 1. Forward copies of this adopted Resolution to all members of our congressional delegation in Washington, D.C. ; to Governor John Carlin; the Directors of the Kansas Department of Economic Development and Kansas Department of Transportation; 2. Elicit support for this proposal from local Chambers of Commerce, Economic Development Committees; Tourist Promotion organizations; The National Association of Railroad Passengers; active student and senior citizen groups and all other potential users of passenger rail transportation services. 3. Make a concentrated effort to keep local news media representatives informed and involved. in the process of accomplishing the goal of expanding Amtrak service across the state of Kansas and thereby improving the quality of life of many of our citizens.
