RESOLUTION NUMBER 87-3879
A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING A SALINA BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE
FOR CELEBRATION OF THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION.
WHEREAS, on September 17, 1787, delegates to the Philadelphia
convention framed the Constitution of the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Constitution was thereafter adopted by the several
states; and
WHEREAS, the Bicentennial of the Constitution offers a unique
opportunity for the nation's citizens to learn more about their system of
government, to remember the origins of their freedom and to pay tribute to the
document that produced a way of life envied the world over; and
WHEREAS, national and state Bicentennial events provide an
appropriate setting for all citizens of Salina to reexamine and reaffirm the
principles for which the Constitution and this country stand; and
WHEREAS, the people of Salina have petitioned their City Government
to establish a Bicentennial Committee to promote consideration, discussion and
debate of the. Constitution, in this its two hundredth year, SO NOW,
THEREFORE
Kansas:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Governing Body of the City of Salina,
Section 1. That the Board of Commissioners does hereby designate the
City a Bicentennial Community and do hereby establish a Salina Bicentennial
Committee, whose membership shall be broad-based and representative of the
community, to develop a commemorative program that will inform the citizens of
Salina about the meaning and significance of the Constitution. This Committee
shall consist of no fewer than ten (10) nor more than fifteen (15) members to be
appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the other Commissioners.
Adopted by the Board of Commissioners and signed by the Mayor this
9th day of February, 1987.
