CONSIDERATION OF ADDITIONAL STAFFING IN WASTEWATER DIVISION
Issue Background:
At an earlier study session, the City Manager and Director of Engineering and
Utilities reported to the City Commission regarding certain staffing problems in the
Sewage Collection Section of the Wastewater Division. This working group (current
six employees) is responsible for all regular maintenance and repair of 230 miles of
sanitary sewers, numerous manholes and 53 sewage pump stations. City staff, after
careful review of staffing alternatives, recommends the addition of two employee
positions in this division for the following reasons:
1. To ensure compliance with Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requirements while
remaining capable of 24 hour per day emergency maintenance response.
2. To ensuz;e our ability to meet safety requirements when forming work crews for
below-ground maintenance in light of scheduling changes in paragraph one.
3. To enhance our preventative maintenance and regular sewer inspections in an
effort to reduce the incidence and severity of sewer line backups, costly and
inconvenient to the city and citizens.
Requested Action:
Motion to authorize two additional Utility Maintenance Worker I positions in the
Wastewater Division.
