BACKGROUND: The Salina Christian Academy (SCA) has requested a review of t heir current school zone signage plan. A major concern expressed by the sc hool was the need for addi tional signage and the reinstallation of flashing school zone lights. A review of the school zone signage plan was c onducted by the City Engineer and other key staff members to determine if additional signage and flashing lights would be necessary. They reviewed the appropriate types and placem ent of signage, the added benefit of flashing lights, and the consistency with other school zone locations. The results of that review indicted that a new school zone signage plan for SCA was appropriate. The enclosed diagram outlines the revised plan. The cost to accomplish these changes would run about $2,600 for the additional signs, poles, and electrical connections. With the old flashing school lights from Lowell Elementary School that closed in 2002 still in inventory, there would be no additiona l cost for the flashing li ghts. If approved, we estimate activation of the signage and flashing lights within two weeks. FISCAL NOTE: Sufficient funds are available within the Traffi c Control operational budget to accomplish these proposed changes. COMFORMANCE WITH STRATEGIC PLAN: Goal 3: The City will provide the highest quality of services, consistent with governing body direction available resources and staff commitment to quality. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Staff recommends the approval of the school zone signage changes at the Salina Christian Academy as presented.
