ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM JACK ROLFS
The Computer Technology Department continues to focus on enhancing the city’s ability to
provide public services through the use of technology. Following are some of the activities we
have been working on since our last update to you in November of 2006.
We have converted our entire website to a new system purchased from QScend. Individual
departments are now updating and controlling their own content. Citizen service requests can
now be entered online and citizens are taking advantage of it. Expect to see an article on the
citizen service request system in an upcoming In Touch article and is inserted into the Water
Customer Accounting bills. On Wednesday of last week, 881 visitors came to our web site. Our
average number of visits during a day has steadily increased over the last few months and now
is over 800. We have received many compliments on our new site and it is working quite well for
us.
Email SPAM is still around. 90% of the emails we receive from the outside world are SPAM.
Last week our biggest SPAM day saw us receiving a little under 10,000 SPAMS. Our email
users have not yet asked us to turn off our SPAM filter!
We are in the process of putting hardware in pl ace to convert our mobile displays to use a
cellular network. This will make the downloading of mug shots and the uploading of field reports
much faster. This project is coming to fruition because of great cooperation between 911, Saline
County and the city of Salina. It will certainly benefit all of us and the project is progressing
smoothly so far. We feel the conversion will be completed before the second half of the year
begins.
Fiber has been laid between the Bicentennial Center and the Water Treatment Plant. We
recently converted our network to start using the new fiber and the improvement in speed over
wireless is quite amazing. It would take one heck of a salesman to convince the WTP folks to go
back to wireless.
